About

The GRIALE research group from the University of Alicante organizes the Second International Workshop on Advanced Studies of Humor and Gender, which focuses on interactional humor.

GRIALE is the only research group dedicated to the study of irony and verbal humor in Spain. Founded in 2002, it has had six R&D projects, as well as several grants from the University of Alicante. Its main objectives are the pragmatic analysis of irony and humor, the observation of sociocultural aspects such as gender and its impact on irony and humor, the acquisition of humor in children, and the application of the obtained results to the teaching-learning of Spanish as a foreign language and to language disorders, especially those related to the autism spectrum. In addition, we have developed several humor corpora, which can be found in the OBSERVAHUMOR.COM platform.

GRIALE has an internationally recognized prestige. Since its foundation in 2002, it has periodically organized several international meetings such as the following:

2011. Congreso Internacional sobre la ironía y el humor

2015. International Workshop on Advanced Studies of Humor and Gender

2017. International Symposium on Figurativeness

2019. International Conference on Verbal Humor

The specific objectives of this Second International Workshop on Advanced Studies of Humor and gender are:

  • To deepen the relationship between gender, humor, and identity.
  • To open a new line of research on interactive humor, going beyond oral genres and integrating written and technological genres, such as WhatsApp, Twitter, blogs, or virtual forums, among others.
  • To integrate sociocultural aspects (age, gender, socio-cultural level, etc.) in the negotiation of humor.

The Workshop is structured in international keynote lectures, papers, and early-stage research presentations.
