María Belén Alvarado Ortega is associate professor of Spanish language at the University of Alicante. Her research focuses on phraseology, the use of courtesy in conversation, Spanish in tourism for specific purposes, irony and humour. Some of her most salient works are Las fórmulas rutinarias en español: teoría y aplicaciones (Stock phrases in Spanish: theory and uses) (Frankfurt. Peter Lang, 2010) and Irony and Humor: From pragmatics to discourse (Amsterdam, John Benjamins, 2011). She is a member of the GRIALE research group, EPA-IULMA, as well as the IUIEG (the University Institute of Gender Studies Research). Various articles of hers have been published in journals such as European Journal of Humour Research, RESLA, SOPRAG, Onomázein, Procedia: Social and Behavioral Sciences, Lingüística Española Actual and RILCE.
